1. You Feel Tired All the Time
Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called EPO (erythropoietin) that tells your body to make red blood cells. When kidneys are damaged, they produce less EPO. Fewer red blood cells means less oxygen reaches your muscles and brain.
The result? You feel exhausted even after a full night of sleep. Simple tasks like climbing stairs or cooking feel unusually tiring.
What most people think: “I am just stressed or getting older.” What it could mean: Your kidneys are struggling.
2. Swelling in Your Feet, Ankles or Face
Kidneys remove extra fluid from your body. When they stop working properly, fluid builds up inside your body tissues. This causes visible swelling — most commonly in the feet, ankles, legs, and sometimes around the eyes in the morning.
If you press your finger on a swollen area and the dent stays for a few seconds, this is called pitting oedema — a sign that fluid is collecting in your tissues.
3. Changes in How Often You Urinate
Any change in your urination pattern can be a kidney warning sign:
- Urinating more frequently, especially at night (nocturia)
- Urinating less than usual
- Feeling pressure or difficulty while urinating
- Urine that is foamy or bubbly (protein in urine)
- Urine that is darker than usual or has blood in it
Your kidneys make urine. When they are damaged, urine production changes. Never ignore unusual changes in urine — they are one of the earliest and most reliable kidney warning signs.
4. Persistent Puffiness Around Your Eyes
Protein should stay in your blood. When kidneys are damaged, protein leaks into the urine. This protein loss causes puffiness around the eyes — especially noticeable in the morning after waking up.
Many people mistake this for poor sleep or allergies. If the puffiness around your eyes is persistent and does not go away after a few days, get your urine tested for protein.
5. Dry and Itchy Skin
Healthy kidneys maintain the right balance of minerals — calcium, phosphorus, sodium — in your blood. When kidneys fail, this mineral balance breaks down. High phosphorus levels in the blood cause severe itching and dry, flaky skin.
If you experience itching all over your body — especially at night — without any visible rash or allergy, kidney disease could be the cause.
6. Shortness of Breath
Kidney failure causes shortness of breath in two ways. First, fluid builds up in the lungs when kidneys cannot remove it. Second, anaemia caused by reduced EPO means less oxygen is carried in the blood.

7. High Blood Pressure That Is Hard to Control
The kidneys and blood pressure have a two-way relationship. High blood pressure damages the kidneys. And damaged kidneys cause blood pressure to rise further.
If your blood pressure is consistently high and does not respond well to medication, your doctor should check your kidney function. This is especially important if you have diabetes — the leading cause of kidney failure in India.
8. Loss of Appetite and Nausea
When kidneys stop filtering waste, toxins build up in the blood. This condition is called uraemia. It causes persistent nausea, loss of appetite, and a metallic taste in the mouth.
Many patients describe it as feeling constantly full or queasy — even without eating much. Unexplained weight loss can also occur because the body is not absorbing nutrition properly.
9. Muscle Cramps, Especially at Night
Low calcium and high phosphorus levels — caused by poor kidney function — lead to painful muscle cramps. These cramps most commonly affect the legs and occur at night, disrupting sleep.

10. Difficulty Concentrating and Brain Fog

See a doctor immediately if you notice:
- Blood in urine
- Sudden severe swelling
- Difficulty breathing

Simple Tests That Can Catch Kidney Disease Early
Two simple tests can detect kidney disease before it becomes serious:
Blood test — Serum Creatinine and eGFR This measures how well your kidneys are filtering your blood. A high creatinine or low eGFR indicates kidney damage.
Urine test — Urine ACR (Albumin to Creatinine Ratio) This checks for protein in urine — one of the earliest signs of kidney damage.
